Old News November 1st, 2009: With another month behind us, and winter soon settling in, I thought it'd be a good time to update this page. Just last week I finished work on a short EP that'll be released in 2 weeks. A small run of hard copy CD versions (even higher quality than the best MP3s) will probably be made, and will be available at the Expozine in Montreal (on November 14th and 15th), and at some shows I will be playing this month. As always with releases under Run Records, you'll be able to download a copy right here for free, and it'll be available on the 14th of this month. I will probably update here at least once more this month, since I will have details about the shows I'm playing, and hopefully I'll have a productive November as well and maybe have new musical news! October 13th, 2009: Things are looking up for this year, I've finally started making music again after more than 2 months of not working at all. I bought a little laptop that I can carry around, and so I go to coffee shops to work on music, and it's actually a pretty great and encouraging environment to work in. Speaking of coffee shops, I will most likely be playing in one in late November, though I'm not quite sure what sort of sound I want for that set yet, so I may have to compose something completely new. In terms of my series, DSS, I have put that on hold for a month as I can't really work on it on my small laptop, and I can't really ever find the time to work in my current place of residence. Though I'm moving soon so I'll have more time to work again, which is rather exciting, so hopefully there'll be more updates to come on here! September 12th, 2009: I haven't updated here in a while so I thought I'd write about some various developments. I played a show quite a while ago, in July, and presented my most recent finished album (DSS: Part I). It was really enjoyable playing this set live because the live set scenario was in my mind during the composing, and to see (and hear) it working so well is always nice. I've begun work on my newest album finally (after almost 2 months of barely making any music) and it'll be apart of my series, this one DSS: Part II of course. This project has always been planned as a 4 part series, so right now it looks like it'll be spring of 2010 before I'm finished. To be honest I had originally planned for the entire series to ready by the end of 2009, so I set my deadline a little bit early, but in the end it's more about getting to a certain spot with my music, than to be somewhere at a certain time. I don't even know if Part II will be finished this year, but I'd certainly like to have it done by February 16th, 2010, which will be exactly 5 years after the completion of my first work. I'd also like to get back into composing classical music, and in August I composed and recorded a 7 minute piece for two of my friends. It's set to some really cool projections and dance, and in the end I was really happy with the result. It made me miss multitrack recording, which is something I haven't done for quite some time. Either way, I used a really old out of tune piano (you just had to find the keys that were in tune) and a set of strings from the inside of another piano, so it made me excited about using stringed instruments. One of my friends left a violin here, so I played around with it every few days for a month. I suppose that means I can't say I haven't worked on music at all, but I didn't record any of my practices which I sort of regret now. Either way, it really got me into the violin, and since my friend has taken her violin I've been thinking of finding one somewhere. So things in the next year look pretty exciting. I don't know if I'll play another show this year, but once I'm finished this series I'd like to do a few shows to present all the works. Right now most of the details are rather vague but I guess it'll make more sense retrospectively!!! May 26th, 2009: The website was moved to a new host today (thanks to 000webhost.com for new hosting, if you need good free hosting go there!), which doesn't really effect much on the viewing end. I put up a new contact option in the contacts page, messages can be sent through the website without having to enter an email client or another website! Feel free to send any comments, I'd love them! May 25th, 2009: There are some noteable updates that've been developing over the course of the past month, so it's time to revise this page! The split with me and Seb (Dadin) goes well, it's pretty much ready to go, so we've decided on a May 31st release date. Less than a week away, I'm pretty excited for it and I hope a lot of people check it out! Also, last time I wrote here I mentioned playing a show sometime, well, I've decided to definitely do it before the end of the summer. I'm aiming for July, but we'll have to see. Either way my idea for the live set turned into a completely seperate project from the album I'm working on, so a lot of my focus has shifted onto this. I'm not entirely sure when that album will be finished, there is actually a limitation on the amount of tracks I can have (the track list is a set of items, and there are only so many of them!) so it might suddenly be done one day if I'm happy with the mixes. In terms of release dates on anything other than the split, I can't be entirely sure. My live set project I'll probably want to release relatively shortly after playing it, it'll most likely be a free download with a short run release of CDRs (for the people who'd want a physical print of the cover, etc). More updates in the coming months! April 5th, 2009: With 2009 well under way, I thought it'd be a good time to update things on here. Me and my friend Seb are working on a split EP, in which we each make a track, trade, and then remix. We hope to release this EP this month, so I definitely hope to have another update in here soon! Either way, it will be released on Run Records, and Seb has a release on there which you should check out right here. My new project for 2009 has been going well (although rather slowly lately), I just need to manage my time better in order to finish everything. In terms of the goals I've set for myself musically this year, I definitely need to start working on things more, because otherwise it slows down the entire process, and right now is the time to be speeding up, if anything. With February already passing, in under a year I will have been working on music for half a decade, which I suppose doesn't seem like a long time, but to me it's definitely a monumental occasion. With that said, I think the quality and intricacies of the music I compose this year should reflect that. As a final note, I may also be playing a show sometime in the future. I have been avoiding shows for a while since preparing for a show can take time away from making new music, but sometimes the notion just comes to me and I have to do it. So yeah, I hope to have all sorts of news to post on here somewhat soon! December 28th, 2008: I haven't written anything here since I released the EP, so I thought I should put it on the front page. You can download it at this page. The EP was released as a high quality 320kbps MP3 file, along with the album cover (which you can see on the albums page). I'm taking a little break for the holidays, and I probably won't work on music (too much) until 2009. I may be playing a show in January or February, I'm not quite sure about when but it should be pretty exciting. I'm torn on whether I want to do a more upbeat set or have it be rather ambient, so I guess I'll let my mood in the next few days decide that. I recently made a video for one of the tracks off the new EP, and it can be seen on the new Videos page I set up. December 9th, 2008: A lot has happened since my last post here, so I thought I should update this page. I have decided that I'll start looking for a label for my full length album very soon, hopefully by the new year I can just wait for responses. In the past few weeks I have been thinking about how I would really like to just release the last 3 months of my musical endeavors completely for free. The last time I gave away my music was for "Live at the Cobalt", which is a recording from July 11th 2007, so it's quite old. As I started thinking about this I started thinking about how it'd be great to make a free online music label. I realize a lot of these already exist, but it seems that most of those don't have consistent quality, at least in my opinion... So I have started an online label, Run Records, to be able to release not only my music for free, but hopefully other musicians that I really enjoy. Music definitely does something different for everyone, but I think there are common feelings that are shared between people who have similiar tastes or ideals. I think that the problem with a lot of labels today is that they're trying to appease a larger audience, as that is what leads to making more money, etc. Having an online label that releases everything for free, and costs no money (besides the domain name, every other aspect of hosting is provided free at random places on the Internet), can completely avoid this issue, which is essentially why I've started it. In the past few months, I have heard so much amazing unreleased music, that I want other people to hear. Now instead of trying to explain to those people what the music sounds like, I can hopefully instead just point them at one website where they can be amazed at the quality that is out there... Anyways, so yeah, I'll be releasing the work I have done for the past 3 months (EP 2008.12) on December 20th, 2008 at Run. I'll definitely post the news in here, and I'm excited to finally release something to my friends after over a year! November 15th, 2008: I decided it was time to update things here, since I haven't done it for quite some time. I finished the album and most aspects of the mastering around August 25th, and had a listening party at the end of August. I think it was received rather well, and I got some good suggestions for slight mastering changes. I moved back to Vancouver (driving across the Northern US with a friend) and concluded every aspect of the mastering process by the end of September. While in Vancouver I finalized most aspects of the album in terms of album art, etc, and I was planning to look for a label in November. After a few weeks of being in Vancouver I realized that I'd rather live in Montreal as I feel more inspired there than in Vancouver (not to mention my friends, good inexpensive shows, and the beautiful winter), so I decided I'd fly back and get settled here by November. So I came back to Montreal mid October, and things are well. I'll probably look for a label soon, and I've been quite productive lately, I'm pretty excited for the future of my music. I have decided a relatively long term direction for my music in the last month, and if things go smoothly I should be well on my way to reaching certain goals I have set. I have quite a bit of new material already, so things are amazing overall. July 26th, 2008: Things are well. I made the first remix (of one of my songs) recently, and it's going well so far (I'm not done of course). The framework of the album I'm working on is done, at least, lengthwise. I may cut songs though, well, if I want to keep it at the length I wanted it. I have a lot of stuff ready already actually, it's quite exciting, and my life will change vastly in the next few months which will probably give me even more inspiration for music. Yayyy! April 27th, 2008: Things are ok, but progress is going rather slowly. This new year has been one that still confuses me quite a bit, I have lost a great friend, David Peet, and it occupies my mind quite a bit, but, he was a major inspirational factor in my music, and over time I feel that working on music is something that helps me return to a state of mind that puts me at peace... My friends had an open mic type of event where we all got 10 minutes to play, which encouraged me to make a short 10 minute set. I am pretty happy with it and a lot of it will be used towards the album, but the album itself still has a long way to go. I have removed a few songs I was planning to put on it, and more may be going later, so we'll have to see how much longer I'll delay finishing it. I also just acquired a new piece of hardware, the Roland MC-505, which is a drum machine, synth and sequencer all in one. I plan to use it for a live set in the next few months, which will be quite nice and relaxing since I won't have to worry about crashing like I always do when doing a set on the laptop. Either way, I will hopefully post something on my music pages rather soon, but overall the only thing I have to say is work is starting to pick up once again (I know I say that a lot), so I'm rather excited for the future. February 16th, 2008: Well, work on the album dwindled quite a bit after the end of December... I spent a good portion of my free time in late December mastering my favourite new track for the upcoming album, and I'm pretty happy with the final result, it definitely lives up to the level of quality that I'm aiming for. After finishing that, though, I had a hard time working on anything new. Recently I was asked to play at a open mic type of event mainly for friends, which is actually today, but I don't have enough new material that would be ready for a live type of environment, so I'm not going to play. But I spent the last week trying to put something together, and of course I knew that a week wouldn't be enough time to put something really great together, so it's not going to happen... But the pressure has given me quite a few new ideas in the direction I want to take, so I'm pretty happy. I'm still thinking about how I want to tie the entire album together, and I have some work done for the album cover. I'm really really hoping that things will be more or less in a cohesive state by the end of April, but I don't want to rush this at all... December 22nd, 2007: Life is going well, work is progressing on the new album quite nicely, the site has been down for a while now, but I finally got around to getting it back up. Yayyy for Google! I modified a few things, like for example there are no more previews of the albums, but there are always some songs on the MySpace site, so it's not a big deal. July 14th, 2007: I had a great time at The Cobalt for Fake Jazz Wednesday on July 11th, and to anyone who came I hope you enjoyed it as well... It really is a great crowd there, I'd love to play there again some time... Either way I recorded the set and mastered it to CD, so if anyone wants a copy feel free to ask. I want to start sampling more, the future looks good musicwise, I got some new ideas recently, I think playing a live set was exactly what I needed to get back on track... June 3rd, 2007: Work begins on new things already, and I'm exploring different aspects of live music and sound. I will be playing a set at the Cobalt's Fake Jazz Wednesdays on July 11th, the information is on the shows page but you can see their myspace site right here. I'm pretty excited, oh, and I might try to have some real CDs pressed for this show!! April 30th, 2007: Mastering etc has been finished on the new album as of April 27th, I settled on the album being named after one of the songs, "An Unpleasant Joke" thanks to my friend Trevor's advice. I am quite happy with it overall, so far I've gotten some good feedback and it's exciting to release a group of songs with such a "whole" feel to it. I definitely planned to have these songs together some day, but it took less time than I figured. I will now begin working on my next live set, and there are also a few other projects I may want to start on. I'm going to start giving my albums out more as well, and I'm starting to consider possibly finding a label. Anyone who has gotten the CD so far, I encourage you to send me some comments through the contact page!!! April 25th, 2007: Sooooo things have been slow. For one, in the past month or so I have somehow lost artistic inspiration for a bit... I'm pretty sure most people go through this, but it's pretty frustrating to sit around wanting to work on music and simply not "feeling it". I think it's slowly coming back though, and I've had many ideas come to me during this dry spell, so it hasn't all been a waste. In other exciting news, I have started working on classical music more this year, and I submitted my first orchestral piece (which is actually based on "Eternal Despair" from the album I recorded in 2006) to a local art magazine called One Cool Word anddddd it was chosen to be on the compilation disc!!! It excites me quite a bit, because I haven't really had any "true" exposure and it's really hard to get random people to listen... I have also begun making copies of my album from 2006, "Open All Frequencies", I am just burning CDRs and printing up the cover, and I'm pretty much giving them away. So if anyone from Vancouver wants a copy, feel free to ask. I am also thinking about how I want to release "Fire Burns Beneath the Skies", it's about 24 minutes long and could make for a nice single buuuut I think I might want to have some other songs with it as well. I am kinda debating whether or not I should look for a label, it would be nice to have an online store where I could sell my albums, but I am not exactly experienced at doing something like that, so it would have to be through some label. I am always looking for the "right time" to do things and it tends to make me delay things a lot, but I always like something to turn out perfect in the end, and I guess that's why I have been going back and forth on this whole label thing. Either way, I think I will release "Fire Burns Beneath the Skies" the ultra-indie (CDRs!!) way somewhat soon, and once again I'll be throwing copies around whenever I think it's ready. Overall though I think things will start picking up for many projects I have in mind, I will hopefully be playing a set at Fake Jazz Wednesdays sometime in July, so when that comes closer I'll definitely post about it. It will be a good time I'm sure, I have something exciting planned for it, so hopefully it'll come close to how I envision it, haha. October 30th, 2006: I haven't done anything with the finished album yet, but November will be the month for getting that figured out. I will post previews of the songs relatively soon, but for now, the important news is what's coming up. I started work on my next full length called "Fire Burns Beneath the Skies Redux". It's based on a song I did (called, you wouldn't have guessed, "Fire Burns Beneath the Skies") on my second album, "Green Skies". The work on it is advancing at an amazing pace and I may play some sets for it in the next month or so. October 22nd, 2006: The album... It's complete! I'm done!!! Mastering is done, all the tracks are finished, and it feels so good to listen through it and hear my vision finally come to realization. I admit there are a few things I want to touch up this following week, but by November I will have the FINAL copy done, and then it will be a matter of giving it to a label and seeing what they think. Live music goes well too, my thought of how the live set will go has been slowly building itself, and within a few weeks I will probably try the live set infront of some people. Should be exciting, I can't wait. October 1st, 2006: I figured I would comment on how things are going. The studio album is almost done. One or two more songs left, depending on how I want to wrap it up. Overall I am aiming to finish it before 2007, though I'm not going to rush things if it looks otherwise. I've been working on the live set as well and developing my style until I feel it reflects what I want... It goes well, and the plan is to have 3 completely different hour long sets ready before mid-2007. If I start working quicker, though, it can happen even by the end of 2006, and soon I will be looking to play some live sets. Yeahh!! May 27th, 2006: So I played my first live set yesterday. It was a short one, only about 25 minutes long, but it was very fun and encouraging. I'm hoping to be able to play more live shows in the upcoming months, and there are 2 songs from the live set on the MySpace site. May 15th, 2006: New design called "bit one", worth a look for sure. It's minimalist and shows my passion for bits... Check it out here (different designs removed). May 5th, 2006: Songs are getting built. Live shows are being put together.... I shall play my first live show at a small open mic night party, hopefully it will go well and I'll be able to post some bits of the liveness up here. April 18th, 2006: Work continues on the album. Another new song is pretty much done. The drum track is the only thing needed for the first half of the album. The direction is forming well, if I'm able to continue working full time on this, I could be done in a few more months for sure... I updated the Albums page with new info about the length of the album to date, etc. February 16th, 2006: New single available. Check the Albums & Singles page to download it, it's under "PCWCM". I composed it recently, and I hope someone enjoys it! Also, I just had to mention that it's been exactly a year since I recorded the first album. Quite the milestone, I'd say. Work is going well on the new album. Since it's been a year, and I'm starting work on the new album, I decided to create a whole new design for the website. You can still see the site under the old design with the button in the top right hand corner... Ahhh I love dynamic web pages... January 22nd, 2006: There is now a way to contact me. I added a form so it should be pretty simple to send a message even if you're not logged into your email account. I also added a "Shows" page, it's mostly useless for now, but it's mainly symbolic for me, because once this new album is done I want to start playing live gigs. Speaking of which, progress on the new album is going well, there are two songs that are mostly done, and work should begin on the next two pretty soon. Actually, I went out and recorded some samples for the fourth song today! Oh, and the previews for the songs in "Green Skies" have been up for a week or so now, I just thought I'd mention it since I didn't in any other updates. I also posted a song I made on the Palm Pilot under "Singles". Check out the Albums & Singles page for the previews and single. December 31st, 2005: I decided that I'd announce that my album is finished on the last day of the year. I admit it is a bit shorter than I expected, but I feel that it accomplishes what I set out to accomplish with it, and it would be stupid to add to it when it's completed. Previews will be added shortly, but the song titles (and album cover, available since I started the project) can already be seen on the Albums page. Work on the third album is already underway... In fact, the first song is already done. This is going to be the fruit of my experimentation.... November 10th, 2005: It's been too long without any updates. Progress is going a bit slow on finishing Green Skies, but I definitely want it done before 2006. I've started another project with Erik Knutsen, so I've been putting my musical efforts into that lately. It won't hurt, though, because I just get more ideas when I'm working with him. I've also started doing some sequencing work, and I'm already starting to plan out what I'm going to do for the third album... July 27th, 2005: New album is being worked on, current information is on the album page, but it's definitely going to change. June 11th, 2005: I finally bought a synth stand, and I'll hopefully be back to playing regularly. Either way, I quickly sat down and played a bit on it while I have the time, and recorded a quick piece. I call it Happy (removed), because well, I'm happy that I can finally play both my synths! Yeah, I suck at my naming scheme. Either way right click on the link "Happy" and choose "Save Target As" to save it. It's 543KB. May 5th, 2005: Site opened, first album finished, including the package design, and some finalizations. Hopefully I'll get a good synth stand soon so I can start working on a second album.
